Benefits of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is easy, efficient, and affordable. The cosmetic dental procedure focuses on binding composite resin and shaping it to adapt and match the surrounding teeth. It is often used for aesthetic purposes to improve the appearance of chipped or discolored teeth. It can also help close gaps between your teeth and change their size and shape as well.

The most important medical benefit of dental bonding is that it can protect a tooth root that has become exposed due to gum disease. Dental bonding plays an important role in repairing decayed teeth because it also fills cavities. It is a great cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings, which are silver in color making them very visible. Whereas, dental bonding is designed to blend in with the color of your natural teeth.

The Procedure

When you come in for your initial consultation, your dentist will select a resin color that will best match your tooth. Once your dentist has chosen a color, they will fix the surface of the tooth to increase its rough texture. The tooth will be coated with a quality conditioning liquid.

Once your tooth is prepared, your dentist will apply the resin. They will mold and smooth it out, so it forms the proper shape. The material will harden under a UV light. Once the bonding material hardens, your dentist can trim and shape the surface. They will also polish the material until it matches the rest of the surface.

The whole process will take 30 minutes to an hour. It’s a very convenient and fast procedure. Keep in mind that coffee, tea, red wine, and cigarettes can stain the resin material. It’s best to avoid them for the first 48 hours after the procedure. You should also brush your teeth often and visit your dental hygienist on a regular basis.

Will The Material Match My Existing Teeth?

Our dental professionals will take the time needed to match the resin material to the color of your existing teeth so that your bonding matches seamlessly. It is important to consider whitening procedures prior to your dental bonding. If you were to have the bonding procedure first and then undergo teeth whitening, your bonding would not whiten the way that your natural teeth would. This would create a stark contrast in the color of your natural teeth and bonded teeth.

This means that you should discuss your interest in any whitening procedures with our team prior to your dental bonding procedure. We highly recommend whitening your teeth first so that we can accurately match the resin material used in the bonding to your newly, whitened teeth.

Who Qualifies for Bonding?

The next step is finding out if you qualify for dental bonding. Usually, you are eligible for tooth bonding if you need additional coverage or tissue to obtain the perfect smile. It’s best to ensure that you have healthy teeth before beginning the bonding procedure.

For example, if you have severe tooth decay or cavities, it’s best to have these issues taken care of before beginning the dental bonding process. These procedures are often used to help close gaps or triangles between your teeth, fix minor chips, shape your teeth, or change the length of a tooth. Whatever the situation, it’s best to have a consultation with a dentist before proceeding with the procedure.

Risks and Disadvantages

Although dental bonding can shape and fix your teeth, there are some risks that you should take into consideration. Since the composite resin is not as durable as your natural teeth, biting your fingernails or chewing on hard materials can chip the resin. If you chip your bonding, you will need to visit our office for repairs as soon as possible. Bonding often lasts several years before it needs to be repaired or replaced.

Dental bonding can also stain over time so if you are a heavy coffee or wine drinker or a smoker, this may not be the best procedure for you. The staining of your bonded teeth over time can make your bonding stand out from the rest of your teeth.

Bonding also does not have the best longevity when compared to other dental solutions such as veneers. Dental bonding typically lasts around three to seven years depending on how well you care for your teeth. How long the bonding will last depends on how much bonding was done and on your dental health.

If you routinely brush your teeth twice a day, floss, and use mouthwash on a daily basis, your dental bonding will last for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, if you have a habit of skipping your dental hygiene routine, your dental bonding may need to be replaced more frequently.

The Cost

Dental bonding costs average between $300 and $600 per tooth. The overall cost will depend on how much bonding is needed, if any other dental issues need to be addressed prior and your dental insurance. Some insurance companies may cover a portion of your costs depending on the reason for the bonding and your insurance coverage.

If your dental bonding is considered a cosmetic procedure, most insurance companies will decline to provide coverage; whereas if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, you may be able to use your insurance coverage.

How to Decide If Dental Bonding Is Right for You

Dental bonding can help improve your smile. If you are interested in the procedure, it’s best to talk to our dentist. We can provide you with the proper consultation to see if you qualify. Our dental team will assess your current oral health, bone density and needs. We will then review all your possible treatment options and help you select the best path to achieve your goals. If your priorities are a quick, affordable solution and your health supports it, bonding may be the best solution.

Once you decide to move forward with dental bonding, you can schedule an appointment to begin the procedure. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes so it’s typically fast and convenient, and can be completed in one office visit. After the procedure, it’s best to make sure that you practice excellent dental hygiene on a daily basis and chew your food carefully. Since the resin materials are very delicate, they can break easily.

To ensure that you have a great dental bonding experience, it’s best to have the procedure done by a dental clinic with years of experience and expertise. We put our best foot forward for every patient that walks through our door. We are invested in helping you achieve the smile you have always wanted and to make it a pleasant and comfortable experience. If you are considering dental bonding, contact us today!

How the Procedure for Lumineers is Different from Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers have given cosmetic dentistry a bad rap when it comes to how they impact the health of your teeth long-term. Veneers look wonderful and for decades they were used by celebrities to change the shape, length, and color of their teeth.

However, the procedure is quite invasive because the tooth structure must be drilled down to make room for the veneers which are thick. The result is a stunning smile, but the procedure often comes at a price.

Porcelain veneers lead to pain and sensitivity during the procedure. In some cases, patients complain about lifetime sensitivity due to porcelain veneers. This means they can no longer drink hot or cold beverages.

Lumineers are a non-invasive alternative that do not involve drilling and require minimal preparation of the enamel. The process typically involves a deep cleaning and light sanding, which means there is nothing invasive that would cause sensitivity.

Unlike porcelain veneers, Lumineers do not cause any pain when applied on the tooth. There’s no need for anesthesia, shots, strong painkillers, or acrylic temporaries between dental appointments.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a restorative and cosmetic dental solution. They are an improved type of veneers.

How do Lumineers differ from traditional veneers?

Lumineers are thinner and more translucent than traditional veneers. At approximately .3mm thick, they are easier to place on teeth. Since Lumineers are thin, significant amounts of enamel do not have to be removed from the teeth, unlike other veneers.

Another difference is Lumineers are more translucent than their porcelain counterparts. This means that your natural tooth color and enamel can show through. The downside to the translucency is that it may not effectively cover tooth discoloration. If you are considering veneers due to severe discoloration, a traditional porcelain veneer may be the best option for you.

Lastly, there are several differences in the application process. Traditional veneers typically require an extensive visit to your dentist, including numbing shots and temporary acrylics, which can be uncomfortable and unsightly. Lumineers are much easier to apply and don’t require anesthesia or acrylics.

Who is a good candidate for Lumineers?

If you have mildly discolored teeth, chipped teeth, or gaps between your existing teeth, Lumineers can help. They can also be used as an alternative to braces and can reshape teeth. If you believe you may be a candidate for Lumineers, schedule a consultation with our dentist to see if Lumineers are right for you.

Is the process painful?

Lumineers are easy and usually painless to apply. Lumineers can be applied in as little as two visits. During your first visit, we will take impressions of your top and bottom teeth. The molds that are taken are then sent to a specialized lab where your Lumineers are custom made.

A few weeks later, you will come back for a second visit where we will apply your Lumineers. We will check your bite and the fit and make sure they are perfect before you leave our office.

How long do Lumineers last?

Lumineers are quite durable. When well cared for and paired with good oral hygiene, they can last for over 20 years.

Do Lumineers require special care?

Veneers do not require special care but you should maintain regular brushing, flossing and dental visits. In addition, we recommend avoiding hard foods because they can chip or damage your Lumineers.

Are Lumineers removable?

If for any reason you no longer want your Lumineers, you can remove them. Because your natural teeth are not damaged in the application process, you may be able to have your Lumineers removed with your natural teeth still intact.

I may need braces, can I get Lumineers instead?

Lumineers will not straighten your teeth, but can be used to give you the appearance of a straight and more uniform smile. It’s best to consult with our experienced dentist who can help you select the best treatment option for your needs.

How much do Lumineers cost?

Lumineers can range between $800 to $2000 per tooth depending on the individual’s specific needs. Because Lumineers are considered cosmetic dentistry, they usually are not covered by insurance.

Can I still eat sticky foods if I have Lumineers?

Yes! Lumineers are adhered to your teeth securely so you can eat your favorite carmel apples or salt water taffy without worry.

If you have any cosmetic dentistry concerns, call our office today. We will take our time to listen to your concerns and use our years of experience to offer you the best possible solution. We can’t wait to help you achieve your perfect, healthiest smile!

The Aesthetic Differences Between Lumineers and Veneers

While porcelain veneers look good on camera, there are a couple of glaring issues with them: in reality, they tend to be a bit too big and do not reflect enough light.

Typically, natural teeth are not pearly white, and they also have a certain level of translucency. If someone has an opaque, pearly white smile, it may be obvious that their teeth are unnatural. A natural translucent effect can be obtained through Lumineers unlike porcelain veneers.

Another perk to Lumineers is that they are very thin, creating a more natural look.

How long does it take for Lumineers to be attached to your natural teeth?

Since there is not much preparation needed, the process usually requires only one or two dental visits. Porcelain veneers involve a lot more preparation because your teeth must be drilled down and there is sensitivity that may occur during the procedure.

The procedure only gets slowed down if you need other dental treatments before the Lumineers can be attached. For example, a tooth that has a cavity must be fixed prior to beginning a cosmetic procedure.

What are Lumineers made out of?

Like veneers, Lumineers are made out of a sheet of porcelain, which is as thin as a contact lens. Depending on the specialist and how well you take care of your teeth, the results of the procedure can last anywhere between 20 and 30 years.

The Benefits of Lumineers

Because this procedure is noninvasive and does not cause sensitivity to your teeth, it comes with a few added benefits, including the following:

  • They can be easily removed with no damage to your teeth if you decide they are not a good fit for you.
  • Your sensitive teeth are not in danger since your enamel will not be damaged.
  • The procedure can be done in just one or two visits to the dentist.
  • The procedure is pain-free and there is no need for painkillers after the procedure.

However, not every patient is a good candidate for Lumineers. If you already have bigger teeth and want to slim them down, keep in mind that Lumineers may have the opposite effect because there is no drilling involved. If you suffer from gum disease, cosmetic procedures such as Lumineers and veneers are not recommended as well.

What is the time frame for this procedure?

Because there is minimal preparation, this procedure often requires one to two visits.

What to Expect

Invisalign benefits go beyond being able to play sports or not having to worry about plaque build-up.

During the treatment, you can eat all of your favorite foods regardless of how chewy, sticky, or crunchy they are. Another added benefit is the fact that you’ll experience less pain compared to metal and ceramic braces. There will still be pressure on your teeth and gums, but it’s the most comfortable treatment option on the market right now. Also, if you have sensitive gums, you can ask your specialist for advice on reducing the friction between the aligners and your gums.

After the procedure is complete, because the teeth tend to shift back to their former position, you’ll be given retainers to wear.

Procedure

During the appointment, the specialist will first check the state of your teeth and decide whether you’re a good fit for Invisalign. If you’re a good fit for the treatment (most people are), a 3D scan will be taken of your teeth and gums, rather than making a mold of your teeth in the traditional treatments. The information will be processed by a computer that will calculate how your teeth will move and how long the treatment will take. You can even see a preview of the results.

Usually, the treatments last anywhere between 6 and 16 months, depending on the severity of the case. During the treatment, a new set of clear aligners will be made for you every two or three weeks.

Invisalign FAQ

How does Invisalign straighten my teeth?

The aligners are not only removable, they are also replaceable. In fact, you will need several sets of it throughout the course of the treatment. Your dentist will specifically plan out everything after examining your teeth. When your teeth have moved, you will need another aligner until the treatment is complete. Your teeth will approximately shift to a new better position every two weeks.

How long is the treatment?

There is no exact length of treatment. This is in a case to case basis. Several factors need to be determined by your dentist; such as the severity of your case and your age. The average length of treatment for adults, however, is around 12 months. But only your doctor can really say how long is the treatment.

How do I get started?

The first thing to do is to determine if Invisalign works for you. Do this by taking our assessment. After that, if the treatment is right for you, make the necessary appointment with a reliable provider. Make sure that you choose the doctor who has the experience and the right credentials. Find the one you’re most comfortable with.

Do all dentists treat with Invisalign?

No, only those who have attended and completed specialized instruction and training can perform the treatment. Not only that, even if they are already trained providers, they are still required to submit treatment reviews, on a regular basis, for proper review. In order for them to be a “Preferred Provider,” they must keep themselves abreast by completing clinical classes.

How often must I wear it?

Although the aligners are removable, you must not remove them for too long. As much as possible, only remove them when it’s really necessary, like when you eat or brush your teeth. Most providers suggest that wearing the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day makes the treatment faster and more effective.

Do I need to continually see my doctor?

Yes, your aligners will need to be replaced with a new one after every two weeks or so. I some cases, regular appointments are once every four weeks. Regular appointments are necessary so that the doctor can properly track your progress and ensure that everything’s working out as planned.

Would I need attachments for my treatment?

This depends on your specific treatment, and how your teeth respond to it. In certain cases, “ridges” or “attachments” are required. They are used to help the aligner grip your teeth better. Attachments are enamel-colored composites which are placed on your teeth. The aligners will hold on to these for a better grip and effective results.

Is Invisalign painful?

Here’s a good thing about Invisalign. It is not painful and uncomfortable unlike metal braces. The worst that one can experience when wearing the aligners is a mere discomfort, which is temporary, and usually happens during the first few days of the treatment. This discomfort normally goes away on its own as it is only caused by the pressure inserted by the aligners to push your teeth in place.

How much does it cost?

There is no exact figure since only your provider or doctor can determine the cost for you. The cost will be determined from your specific needs and situation. The longer you need to wear the aligners or the more difficult your case is, the larger the cost. Generally, considering the amount of orthodontic work and the use of innovative technology, Invisalign is comparatively more expensive than traditional braces. The good news is, many dental offices offer affordable and flexible monthly payment options for their patients.

Will it be covered by my insurance?

If you have orthodontic coverage, then the answer is in the affirmative. This is for general cases. However, you must still check and go over your personal coverage plan since the benefits can vary from policy to policy.

Are the aligners prone to falling off?

No, they don’t fall off. They firmly grip your teeth, in certain cases, with extra help from attachments. So whether you are sleeping or talking, there’s no cause of concern; your aligners will stay where they are without making you uncomfortable and anxious.

Will the aligners affect my speech?

There is a possibility, but this is only temporary. The way some patients talk or pronounce some words may be affected. But this only usually happens during the early days of the treatment, since the patients are still adjusting to the aligners. But once the treatment is done or when you’ve gotten used to wearing the aligners, your speech will go back to normal.

Are there eating restrictions?

There are no restrictions, and that’s what makes this better. You can drink and eat anything you want; unlike when you’re wearing traditional braces where there are quite a handful of restrictions. This is because the aligners are removable. Doctors even require you to remove the aligners when you eat, drink or brush your teeth.

Can I smoke or drink while wearing the aligners?

When you’re on Invisalign treatment, you must not smoke when you’re wearing the aligners. If you really need to smoke, remove the aligners. They can become discolored if you smoke while wearing them. As with alcohol, you can if you only drink a moderate amount. This goes with any other sugary beverage as well like cola.

Can I chew gum with the aligners on?

No, you must not chew or eat anything while wearing the aligner; whether it’s a gum, a snack, or a full meal. We recommend that you remove the aligners when you eat.

How do I clean my aligners?

You can regularly clean the aligners by brushing them. You need to rinse them thoroughly with lukewarm water before putting them back in. However, the best way to clean them is to use a product specially designed for it. It’s called the Invisalign Cleaning system.

Do I need to sanitize the aligners?

Yes. As a general rule, don’t put your aligners in your mouth if they are not clean and hygienic. For this, you can still use the Cleaning System. It both cleans and sanitizes. Take note that you must not use hot water in cleaning your aligners. Invisalign is made of a special kind of plastic, which may be irreparably warped if exposed to hot water.

What should I do if there’s a crack?

You must contact your Invisalign provider immediately. If there’s a crack or any damage, the aligners need to be replaced.

Will I need to wear retainers after the treatment?

Yes, just like in traditional braces, retainers are necessary. This is recommended by most doctors as it is considered part of the whole orthodontic treatment process, or shall we say, after-treatment process. A retainer is required in order to prevent your teeth from gradually shifting back to how they were before the treatment. As to what kind of retainer to use, discuss it with your dentist.

What’s the difference between Invisalign and traditional braces?

Invisalign® clear braces have many advantages over conventional braces. Though the cost may be a little bit higher, the appearance, convenience and comfort of Invisalign® may justify the price difference.

The Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. Invisalign patients won’t have a hard time eating their favorite foods or brushing their teeth. Clear aligners are removable, so when you want to eat something sticky or hard to chew, you can just take them off.

When it comes to the traditional braces, cleaning and flossing is a time-consuming task because of the wires and brackets. In many cases, patients develop cavities during the treatment due to the fact that some areas are harder to reach.

See additional details for differences between Invisalign and traditional braces.

Is Invisalign For Me?

Invisalign works for almost everyone, mostly for teens and adults. It can be used as treatment for various common teeth-related problems, from minor adjustments to extensive improvements. Whether your teeth are widely-spaced or crowded, this treatment works. It also works for people with crossbites, underbites and overbites, among other complex issues.

Get Started with Invisalign

Invisalign is a truly revolutionary treatment available for all ages that takes the discomfort away from wearing braces to school or work.

At East Valley Dental Professionals, insurance is accepted and if you’re interested in learning more about Invisalign, the costs, and whether you’re a good fit for the treatment, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment.

FAQ for Dental Implants

How much do implants cost?

Dental implants range anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000, which includes all parts of the process. Although you’ll pay more than dentures and bridges, implants last 10+ years longer and are a lifelong tooth solution.

Why can’t I just get a crown? Isn’t that the same as an implant?

No, crowns are not the same as implants. While they do last 10-15 years, they are not fused into the jawbone with titanium abatement or implant. This decreases its life and makes it more susceptible to breaking or falling out.

Do I still need to brush and floss my implant?

Our team highly recommends continuing proper care with your hygiene practices, even with an implant replacement tooth. You don’t want to run into any future gum disease and protect surrounding teeth from plaque buildup.

Types of Full Dentures

For tooth replacement, the most common option is some form of a removable denture. If you are looking to replace a single tooth or a small section while retaining some real teeth, you may opt for partial dentures. But if you are needing a replacement for a full arch, full dentures will give you the best results for functionality, ease of daily cleaning, and the appearance of natural teeth.

Conventional Dentures

Traditional dentures are replacement teeth that are designed to rest on your gum tissue. They are typically held in place by suction, dental glue, or a combination of both. These removable dentures are most commonly designed for the upper arch.

Stud Attached Dentures

This type of dental implant is secured by multiple metal implants that stick out from the jaw bone. They are typically ball-shaped on top to create a ball and a socket-like connection for the prosthetic denture. This connection creates a sturdy anchor that allows for a more secure fit and better functionality.

Implant-Supported Overdentures

The type of implant you are fitted for depends on your overall oral health and levels of bone loss. Implant-supported dentures are secured by attaching to metal implants that protrude from the jaw bone, therefore your dentist will select your overdenture type based on how many implants your jaw can support.

Stud Attached Dentures

If your jaw bone is not strong enough to support more than 2 implants, the use of a bar-retained denture may be appropriate. In this case, two similar implants are anchored to the jaw and a thin metal bar is placed to connect the two. The prosthetic denture is then attached to the bar using clips to secure it in place.

Benefits of Overdentures

There are many benefits to selecting implant-supported overdentures. The most obvious reason is that the secure anchoring allows for less diet restriction. With common dentures, many foods need to be avoided, pre-cut, or mashed in order to consume with dentures. With implants, the connection is stronger, thus supporting a stronger bite.

Also, overdentures promote a stronger jaw with less bone resorption or decay. Due to the likelihood of shifting, traditional dentures promote chewing without use of the lower jaw bone. This leads to faster bone decay and facial contour deterioration.

With implant overdentures, the implant creates support for the jaw and gums and helps to fortify and strengthen your natural materials. This prevents bone loss and allows for full movement of the jaw without fear of slippage.

The only way to know if overdentures are a better choice than conventional dentures in your specific case is to consult with a trusted dentist. The benefits of dentures compared to implants and dental bridges are flexibility, cost and a less invasive procedure. On average, dentures are a much more affordable option than implants and can be less expensive than dental bridges. The actual cost of each procedure will depend on if there are any existing health issues that need to be addressed and the type of tooth replacement needed, i.e. partial bridge, multiple implants, etc.

Dentures are also a great option for patients who do not want to undergo surgery, which is required for dental implants. Your dentures can be prepped and fitted in as few as two dentist visits.

Your overall oral health may be a determining factor when deciding which option is best for you. Dental implants require strong bone density because a prosthetic base is screwed into your jawbone. If your bone is not healthy, an implant may not stay in place. Dentures can restore your smile without surgery or a prosthetic base.

Types of Dentures

Depending on the number of missing teeth, there are two primary types of dentures: partial dentures and full dentures. They differ in the number of teeth they replace, as well as their design.

Partial Dentures: For a patient who cannot obtain dental implants, partial dentures can effectively replace consecutive missing teeth. A removable partial denture usually contains a metal framework that anchors with clasps or gaskets to the remaining permanent teeth. Where teeth are missing, replacement teeth stick to the framework, which is gum-colored.

Full Dentures: Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, can replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both. Instead of a framework that attaches to natural teeth, a full set of dentures consists of an acrylic band that rests on your gum tissues and extends all the way around your mouth, with replacement teeth appearing where your natural ones previously were.

Full dentures can be conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are utilized after the missing teeth and gums have healed, usually 8 to 12 weeks after tooth loss or removal. Immediate dentures are exactly what they sound like, dentures that are made and installed immediately after tooth loss or removal. Immediate dentures are appealing because the patient does not have to go weeks without replacement teeth.

What’s the Process Like?

The timing of the procedure will depend on what type of dentures you choose. If you select conventional dentures, the place where the dentures will go has to be vacant for several months—either because they fell out naturally or because your dental professional removed them. Your gum tissue has to heal before the procedure and allows for a more accurate impression of your ridge, which results in a better fit. Once your dentist has the impression, the process for creating your dentures will begin.

More commonly, however, we will begin the process immediately, as most of our patients do not want to spend significant amounts of time without replacement teeth. We may begin by removing damaged teeth if necessary. Then, we will take accurate molds of your mouth. The molds are then used to create custom dentures, designed to fit your mouth comfortably and match your existing teeth if needed. We will take our time to ensure that your new dentures fit exactly as they should. Dentures can take some time to adjust to, but a perfect fit is critical for your dental health and comfort.

Are They Painful?

The only painful aspect about the process is the removal of any faulty teeth, which may or may not be necessary. If your teeth have already fallen out or have been removed, then the entire process should be painless.

How to Care for Your Dentures

Maintaining proper oral health is always important, and is especially true when you have dentures. Here are a few common steps that a patient with dentures will take to ensure that their dentures and mouth remain in good health.

  • Rinse overnight: Every night while you are sleeping, you should soak your dentures and rinse them before putting them back in your mouth.
  • Clean after every meal: After you eat, you should remove and clean your dentures, as well as your mouth. When you clean them, use a soft toothbrush with warm water. Never use toothpaste or hot water, as both can do significant damage to the structure and surface of the dentures.
  • Use denture cleanser: To ensure that harmful microorganisms don’t grow, use a denture cleanser. This will not only protect your oral health, but your overall health as well.

Are Dentures Right for You?

If you are looking to replace multiple teeth, dentures are a great option. They are affordable, flexible and can restore your smile and mouth without zeroing out your bank account. Since dentures are not permanent, you can easily change your mind if you do not like the way they look.

Our team of qualified, experienced dental professionals at EVDP can help you decide if dentures are the best option for you. Schedule a consultation today!

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The ideal candidates for this type of “smile makeover” are those with healthy gums. Those with an underbite or overbite may need treatment from an orthodontist. Your dental professional can assess whether veneers are appropriate for you and which material to use.

Those who grind their teeth are typically not good candidates because they are more likely to damage their new veneers. This type of cosmetic dentistry is also suitable for those with gum disease. Your dental provider may use x-rays to help make these assessments.

Common Reasons for Getting Veneers

Tooth discoloration is among the leading reasons for considering porcelain veneers. Discoloration may be caused by certain medications such as tetracycline. Surprisingly, excessive exposure to fluoride can alter the color of your teeth as well. Those who have had large cavities filled that are visible often pursue veneers, too.

People who have had a root canal often have discolored teeth and veneers can correct this discoloration. Veneers are most commonly applied to the upper front teeth. Some individuals that have a single broken or cracked tooth will have a single veneer applied.

Others may have them applied in sets of six or more. Although veneers are most commonly used on the most visible teeth in the mouth, some individuals will also have them applied to their lower teeth. For some, this allows for a more uniform overall appearance.

Advantages

Some of the best aspects commonly associated with porcelain veneers include the following:

  • They are a longer-term solution to discolored teeth compared to tooth whitening, which requires multiple treatments.
  • The porcelain veneers resist stains better than natural teeth and treatment does not harm the enamel that protects the tooth structure.
  • The color of the material will be customized to closely match your other teeth.
  • The majority of individuals do not experience discomfort.
  • Depending on the type of veneer and your lifestyle, they may not need to be replaced for many years.
  • The material tolerates the majority of foods and beverages well and does not irritate the gums.

Disadvantages

Several primary disadvantages include the following:

  • Porcelain veneers cost more than resin composite materials.
  • They are typically not able to be repaired if they are chipped or cracked.
  • Some individuals experience increased sensitivity to hot and cold food or drinks.
  • Many individuals will find that they are unable to afford porcelain veneers.

Estimated Cost

Similar to dental implants and other cosmetic procedures, porcelain veneers are usually not covered by dental insurance. The costs are influenced by a host of potential factors. Prices will vary depending on the dental providers and may be affected by regional costs of living.

There are several “no-prep” types of veneers in the market today. They do not require as much preparation compared to traditional veneers. Common brands include Lumineers and Vivaneers. Keep in mind that these types of veneers are generally not as durable as traditional veneers.

In 2017, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry reported that no-prep veneers range from $800 to $2000 each. Traditional veneers cost between $925 and $2,500 per tooth. They also noted that no-prep veneers lasted for an average of five to seven years. The lifespan of traditional veneers averages from 10 to 15 years.

The Procedure

The veneers process is irreversible and is performed in several visits. It’s important to be sure you want veneers before beginning the process. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth. This mold is then taken to a dental lab where the permanent veneers are created.

Your dentist may need to temporarily place a veneer on your tooth to properly gauge the fit and color. The surface of the tooth will be cleaned and etched to roughen the surface for better adhesion. Your dentist will extract approximately a half millimeter of enamel from the surface of the tooth.

The dentist will typically apply a numbing agent to keep pain to a minimum. Some individuals may need pain medication to cope with sensitivity.

The thickness of the veneer will be very similar to that of the enamel that was removed from the surface. A custom cement-like adhesive is usually used to attach the veneer permanently  to the tooth. A special beam of light may be used to adhere the adhesive more rapidly.

Proper Maintenance

Your porcelain veneers should be cleaned, protected, and cared for the same way that your natural teeth should be. Avoid chewing hard foods such as nuts or ice to avoid potential damage. Try developing a habit of chewing with your rear teeth. Those who participate in athletics should always wear a mouth guard protector as well.

Avoid using your teeth to open packaging such as ketchup packets. Certain types of mouthwash contain high levels of alcohol that can potentially weaken the adhesive used to secure the veneers. You should continue brushing your teeth twice a day and floss daily as well.

Porcelain Crowns

Veneers composed of porcelain should not be confused with porcelain crowns. A crown functions to cover a tooth. They may be used to reshape and resize a tooth. They are effective in strengthening and improving the appearance of your teeth. They are commonly used on teeth that have had large fillings or that are broken.

What is the time frame for this procedure?

This process takes approximately two to three visits over a span of about two to three weeks.

FAQs for Teeth Whitening

Is Whitening Treatment Safe for Your Teeth?

The whitening process done in our office is safe. It is done under the supervision of your dentist. While there can be some side effects with products purchased otherwise, our methods are safe and reliable. We recommend avoiding tooth bleaching and other types of bleaching products when used at home. This can damage the gums or tissues in the mouth. Most often, this type of treatment is also less effective. Products like whitening strips and customized tray products from a box are less beneficial overall than visiting our office.

Who Benefits from Tooth Whitening?

Many people benefit from tooth whitening. It can be very effective for individuals who have:

  • Yellowed teeth
  • Stained teeth
  • Discolorations due to food
  • Dull looking teeth
  • Healthy enamel, but it is discolored

If you are unsure if this process can benefit you, we encourage you to come in for a dental appointment. Our team will discuss the options available to you. Our goal is always to protect the tooth enamel, which is the outer surface of the teeth. It is not possible to replace the enamel, but we can remove surface stains from it.

What Is the Most Common Whitening Method?

The answer is professional bleaching. The first thing to do is to go to a dentist to have your teeth assessed and to determine if you are suit for this kind of whitening or not. If yes, the professionals will put a gel or some sort of rubber to protect your gums. After this, they will apply the whitening product on the teeth, which is usually made of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.

How Do We Whiten Your Teeth

After you come in for a dental appointment, we will then discuss your oral health. Remember, tooth whitening does not improve the actual health of your teeth. It does not protect the gums, either. For this reason, you may benefit from a dental cleaning before a whitening application. Your dental care provider will give you this information.

Then, we will introduce you to our whitening products. We use only products with an ADA Seal of Acceptance – and any over the counter products you may be considering should always use this as well.

With our method, we use a tray whitening system. This is not the same as using an at home product. Our products offer a customized tray – one we create with you during your first visit. We make an impression of your teeth for it. This then allows us to create a comfortable as well as reusable whitening tray. It fits properly and perfectly into your mouth. As a result, it creates the best contact with your teeth possible.

From here, we use a whitening gel applied to the inside of the trays to begin the process. This whitening treatment does not take long. It does not hurt, either. Rather, you will need to apply the whitening gel in the tray for the next few days. In doing so, it will work to safely remove surface stains from your teeth. We’ll follow up with you to ensure you are satisfied with the results you get.

How Long Will It Take?

The average timeframe is three to four weeks. By then, you will have visible results. This will require you to visit your dentist around three times. After your first appointment, you will continue applying the whitening product in your home for a period of two to four weeks. You need to do this for 30 minutes to an hour per application, though sometimes the required hours are more, depending on the product you’re using and depending on your dentist.

When Should I Brush My Teeth?

You need to brush your teeth at least twice a day even when you are applying whitening products. Brush your teeth at least once during daytime. We recommend that you brush before applying the whitening product. Also, brush your teeth before going to bed at night. Use fluoride toothpaste.

How Can I Look After My Teeth After Whitening?

After applying the product for a period of four weeks, or as the dentist requires, you need to look after your teeth to maintain the whiteness. You need to stay away from drinking beverages and eating foods that cause stains. Your dentist will tell you what foods and drinks to avoid. Most importantly, stop smoking, as this causes discoloration and staining. Of course, regular visit to the dentist is important too.

Are There Other Whitening Procedures?

Aside from the one already mentioned, power whitening or laser whitening is now gaining popularity. In this procedure, the professionals will put a rubber dam over your teeth to serve as protection for your gums. After this, they will paint a bleaching product all over your teeth. The final part of the procedure is using a laser to activate the chemicals. Studies show that using this procedure can make the teeth five to six times whiter. The results can also be quickly achieved.

Can You Use Whitening Products If You Have Sensitive Teeth?

If you have any type of sensitive teeth, we recommend letting our team know before you visit. We can then determine what the cause of this is so we can treat it if necessary. Tooth sensitivity can occur for many reasons including decay and cavities. We’ll need to treat those conditions to ensure you have the best possible outcome with any type of whitening product.

How You Can Benefit From Teeth Whitening?

The investment in tooth whitening technology and resources like this can significantly improve your overall dental health and give you a boost of self-confidence. If you, like many other people, hate to smile or talk to others because of the lack of luster on your teeth or your dingy rather than bright smile, we can help you. White teeth do not necessarily improve the overall health of your teeth, gum line, or mouth, but it can significantly improve your overall oral hygiene if you continue to brush and floss on a daily basis.

How Much Will This Cost Me?

There is no definite cost to this. One thing’s for sure, power or laser whitening is more expensive than the more traditional professional bleaching. You can ask for an estimate from the dentist before you start the procedure. The charges usually vary from state to state.

Will the Effect Last Long?

Yes. Your teeth will stay white for around three years. However, you must stay away from stain-causing foods and beverages and quit smoking, as already mentioned above. These habits will affect the effect of the whitening product.

Are There Side Effects?

The common minor side effects are sensitivity to cold during or immediately after the whole procedure or treatment. You might also experience white patches on the gums, sore throat or discomfort in the affected area. However, these are normally temporary and will immediately go away after the treatment. But if the side effects persist, it is better to consult your dentist.

Can I Use Home Whitening Kits?

This depends on the kind of product you’re using and of course, with recommendation from your dentist. Some of the products don’t work. The most common kits are paint-on whiteners and whitening strips. They only work to remove discoloration, though. They are not likely to help you with any type of dental concern present, though. The active ingredient in them will vary – be sure it is one you are safe to use.

There are also bleaching agents available. However, we do not recommend using any type of bleaching agent at home until your dentist approves it. It is important to have a thorough dental exam before having this type of procedure done.

Although teeth whitening toothpaste is available in the market, you may realize that sometimes they probably are not the best treatment as teeth whitening toothpaste is designed for very gentle and minor stains.

Are There Instances When Whitening Won’t Work?

Like we said on the preceding paragraph, this depends on the product you’re using, especially if you’re using home whitening kits. However, laser whitening and professional bleaching always work on natural teeth. Just take note that whitening products don’t work on false teeth or dentures.

How Does it Work?

To give you the dazzling color you desire, we use a tray whitening system. First, we make an impression of your teeth – this allows us to create comfortable, reusable whitening trays that are custom-made for your mouth. Whitening gel is then used inside the trays over the next few days to painlessly brighten your smile. It’s as easy as that!

How Does it Work?

Hyaluronic acid helps to keep your skin plump and smooth. As you age, you lose hyaluronic acid, which, in turn, leads to thinner and more wrinkled skin.

Restylane products are FDA-approved dermal fillers that you can inject into the lips or skin to restore a full, smoother appearance. In addition to adding hyaluronic acid, it also adds volume and stimulates your body’s production of collagen.

Our Procedure

Injectable fillers are much less invasive than surgical options. A doctor can easily give you an injection. We work with our patients to determine what they would like to achieve and identify the areas to target.

Once we agree on a treatment plan, we will clean any area that you have identified for an injection. Once we provide you a local anesthetic to eliminate any potential discomfort, we will actually inject the appropriate Restylane product. Depending on how many treatment areas there are, your visit could be completed in less than an hour.

Since this is an outpatient procedure, you can go home as soon as the process is completed. Your recovery time should be minimal, eliminating the need to miss work or any of your regular activities.

Possible Side Effects

While the procedure itself is fairly straightforward, as with any medical procedure, there are possible risks and side effects. Some short term possible side effects include bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness at the injection site, itching, and hyperpigmentation. Long term adverse effects can include ulcers at the injection site, visual disturbances, and late infections.

How Long Does it Last?

The length of time that the desired results last depends on the product, the location of the injection and the depth/condition of the wrinkles that are being treated.

There are several different Restylane products to choose from depending on your goals. Each product has a different estimated longevity:

  • Restylane: This is used to plump and smooth nasolabial folds and can last for up to 18 months.
  • Restylane Silk: This product helps to plump your lips and smooth out wrinkles around your face. Results typically last for around six months.
  • Restylane Lyft: Lyft can be used to treat moderate to severe facial folds and is also approved to be used in the hands. The estimated timeframe for results varies from six months to twelve months depending on the location of the treatment.
  • Restylane Refyne: This product is best for the correction of moderate, thin or superficial lines and generates results can last as long as twelve months.
  • Restylane Defyne: Defyne is a better option for deeper folds and lines and also lasts up to twelve months.

It is important to note that most patients are able to achieve their desired results after one or two treatments, but your doctor can help advise on how much product and how many visits you may need.

Why Have This Procedure at Your Dentist’s Office?

There are many different types of medical professionals and other occupations that can administer Restylane. Legal requirements for these types of procedures and who can perform them vary by state. Consequently, in some places, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, general practitioners, Registered Nurses , and others may legally be able to administer your Restylane.

With that said, dentists are uniquely qualified to treat patients who would like dermal fillers. Dental professionals routinely use fillers in restorative and cosmetic surgery and maintain specialized, unmatched knowledge of the head and neck. The education and training dentists receive make them the ideal administrators of Restylane treatments.

When you are considering any type of medical procedure, it is important to select your provider with care. Follow these tips to select the right medical professional to administer your Restylane.

Ask for their experience and education

Just as you would want to be sure your barber has experience cutting hair, you want to know that the medical professional administering your Restylane knows what they are doing and has done it before. Medical training and experience can make all the difference in your results. Make sure that your providers’ credentials meet your needs so that you don’t take unnecessary risks.

Request references

You wouldn’t trust your child or pet with a stranger without first contacting people who could vouch for their reliability, so it doesn’t make sense to take chances with your face. While some healthcare professionals may decline to give references due to patient confidentiality, it never hurts to ask.

Ask for before and afters

It can be incredibly helpful and informative for you to see actual pictures of your dentist’s prior work. This may be an indicator of his or her skill level and also give you a more concrete idea of the results that are possible when using Restylane.

Check medical review boards

When working with a dentist, you can perform a quick internet search to reach the American Dental Association (ADA) website, which will give you directions on how to contact your state’s dental boards. Within your state’s website, you can look for consumer complaints and check the status of your medical professional’s license.

Take a list of questions that you would like to ask.

Sometimes during an appointment, you may find yourself getting off track or simply forgetting important things you’d like to ask. To avoid this, make a list of your questions and concerns and take it with you to your first appointment. It can be helpful to keep this list on your phone, which is usually harder to misplace than a piece of paper.

Cosmetic procedures, no matter how minimally invasive, can dramatically change your appearance for better or worse. This is why is critical to understand the product that you are considering and trust the medical professional that will be administering it.

If you are considering fillers of any kind, contact our office. We would welcome the opportunity to demonstrate our expertise and help you meet your goals.

What is the time frame for this procedure?

Restylane® usually works for up to six month

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Fillers are used to enhance shallow contours in the face, plump up thin lips, improve or hide scars and soften wrinkles and other facial creases. There are various types of dermal fillers, varying in their longevity, chemical structure and softness. For example, sturdier fillers are used if you want to improve face volume or enhance your cheekbones, while softer ones are used to plump up lips. Ultimately, the kind of fillers you need will depend upon your needs and the suggestions of the person who injects them.

What Do Dermal Fillers like Juvederm Fix?

Dermal fillers are designed to fix a variety of aging concerns. Some of the things dermal fillers can do and fix include the following:

  • Smoothing deep creases (e.g. laugh lines and nasolabial folds) and adding volume to these areas.
  • Filling out hollows on the face, particularly the area under the eyes.
  • Enhancing and restoring the fullness of the cheeks.
  • Smoothing the edges of the lips and making them look plump.
  • Fixing gauntness, particularly in the temple and lower cheek area.
  • Evening out indented scars.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Many people are concerned about this. How long do fillers last? The answer depends on the type of filler you use. On the average, the effects of dermal fillers last from six months to two years. However, if you have the money, you can opt for semi-permanent or permanent fillers which promise longer-lasting results. The effects of these types of filler can last up to five years.

How do These Fillers Work?

Fillers are naturally-derived which makes them safe to use. They are injected into the skin to plump up a particular area, evening the surface and temporarily eliminating folds, wrinkles and facial hollows.

Dermal fillers work because hyaluronic acid absorbs much water, up to 1,000 times its own weight. The hyaluronic acid also binds with collagen and elastin, which makes it easier for basic nutrients to reach and spread evenly in the skin. This is why fillers are essentially helpful in adding volume to sagging skin and restoring youthfulness in the And this is the reason why more and more people try out the fillers.

How Much Do Fillers Cost?

The cost can vary. It depends on the type of fillers that you choose. Restylane and Juvederm are usually priced by the syringe. One syringe may range from $450 to $1300. You should check with your provider to see what their rate is.

What does Botox® do?

The injected Botox® blocks the nerve impulses to the muscles that cause wrinkles and relaxes the muscles. It does not normally interfere with facial expressions. Dramatic improvement in appearance can be seen within two to seven days! However, the treatment is temporary, as the injection wears off and the muscle is able to contract again. Normally the treatment lasts three months, but can last for six months for some patients.

Is Botox Safe?

This brings us to the most important question. Is it safe? The general is answer is “yes.” In fact, Botox has a safe history. According to a study, the FDA only recorded 36 serious adverse effects of Botox from 1989 to 2003. And considering that millions undergo this treatment, such number is relatively small. The safety record for Botox is highly impressive. Some studies might cast doubts as to the safety of Botox. But as far as figures and recorded incidences are concerned, this injection solution is pretty safe.

Is Botox Right for You?

Botox works for everyone. But there are things you need to consider first before you decide. You need to understand that Botox can be expensive especially because you need to periodically get an injection. It must be clear to you first that this treatment is temporary and you need maintenance to keep the effects. Once these minor issues are clear to you, then there’s no reason why you can’t or won’t get a Botox. But if you really want to be extra sure if such treatment is right for you, the best you can do is ask a professional.

How Long Does it Take?

For cosmetic procedures, Botox® is virtually painless and has a very short recovery time. It is administered via a brief, small injection. It is not painful too and is pretty comfortable.

There may be mild discomfort during the injection itself, and some patients have reported minor swelling or redness that may appear in the few days after the treatment. But other than these, you won’t feel a thing.

Is the effect of Botox Permanent?

No. The effect of Botox is not permanent. In fact, it’s a temporary solution for the wrinkles and lines. Typically, patients find that the effect of Botox lasts up to 3 to 4 month, though it depends on each person – on some patients the effects caused by Botox last up to six months. In order to keep the results, it needs to be administered periodically.

Who is a Candidate for Botox?

Both men and women can benefit from Botox. Patients may decide to temporarily reverse the natural signs of aging for any number reasons. Oftentimes patients choose Botox to help them maintain a professional appearance for work.

Why Should I Go to a Dentist Instead of a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon?

It can be argued that dentists are among the most qualified professionals to perform Botox treatments around the mouth and face. While other medical personnel have a basic overview of the oral and maxillofacial areas, dentists are much more knowledgeable and experienced in this region. Dentists are specialized in oral, perioral, and oro-facial procedures and should naturally be thought of an appropriate resource for Botox® treatment.

Why Can Dr. Collins Perform a Botox® Procedure?

Dental students learn the anatomy of the entire human body, with special emphasis on the head and neck, while studying to become dentists. The areas in and around mouth and face are where dentists treat patients on a daily basis. This hands-on experience gives dentists a natural advantage when it comes to giving Botox® injections.

With a few additional courses, dentists can become certified to give Botox® injections to their patients who request it. Having taken the appropriate courses, Dr. Collins is qualified and able to give Botox® to her patients.

What Does a Botox® Treatment Involve?

Botox is administered through a series of brief, tiny injections just under the skin and into the adjacent muscle. Most patients find this procedure quick and painless, however some patients do experience mild discomfort during the procedure or soreness around the injection site in the next few days. Topical anesthetic may be used if desired.

Are There any Disadvantages of Botox?

Potential disadvantages may include soreness, dizziness, bruising, droopiness, and irritation at the injection site. These and other undesirable outcomes are uncommon. Most patients experience no negative side effects and are very pleased with the results of the procedure.

Is Botox Treatment Confidential?

Like all dental procedures, our patients’ Botox® treatments are confidential. More and more patients across the country and around the world are enjoying the benefits of Botox treatments. But, as with many other aesthetic or cosmetic procedures, patients may prefer not to disclose to their family or friends that they are choosing to have procedures done to alter their appearance.

What is the time frame for this procedure?

Botox® is not a permanent solution; follow-up visits about three to six months apart are needed to keep wrinkles from reappearing.
